What to expect.

North Shore  Play therapy recommends one on one weekly therapy sessions over 12 weeks or a more condensed 12 session programme if required.

We recommend the following proven approach

Initial phone consultation with the parent / carer to:
  • Understand the child’s background and the parent/ carer’s concerns.
  • Assess the suitability of Play Therapy for your child.
Week 1: Parent / Carer
  • Initial consultation with the parent/ carer to discuss the child’s behaviours of concern, parenting issues, family history and goals and hopes.
  • Parenting suggestions are offered for the parent/ carer to reflect upon on.
Week 1 – 6: Child
  • The Therapist and child meet for 6 weeks in 40-minute child-directed Play Therapy sessions.
  • The sessions are held at the same time and place to support a sense of care, trust and safety.
Week 6: Parent / Carer
  • Consultation between the parent/ carer and Play Therapist to discuss any observable changes in the child’s behaviour in and outside of the therapy sessions e.g. at home, school etc.
  • Further parental support is provided as necessary.
Week 7 - 12:  Child
  • The Therapist and child meet for the following 6 weeks in 40-minute child-directed Play Therapy sessions.
  • The sessions continue to be held at the same time and place to support a sense of care, trust and safety.
Week 12: Parent / Carer
  • Consultation between the parent/ carer and Play Therapist to discuss any observable changes in the child’s behaviour in and outside of the therapy sessions e.g. at home, school etc.
  • Recommended next steps if/ as required/ preferred.

We would be happy to tailor our approach if a more intensive shorter time frame is preferred.
